Welcome!
In the intricate tapestry of life, each thread contributes to the unique pattern we weave and in effect, live. For me, the decision to homeschool my child emerged as a natural progression, deeply rooted in a career that spanned over a decade as a career consultant and the desire for my child to understand more than what is taught in the classroom.
This professional journey, intertwined with a passion for travel, luxury experiences, and a global worldview, converged to shape my motivation to provide my daughter with a worldly education. If you would like to learn more, keep reading! I will delve into the reasons behind my choice to homeschool, exploring the threads of my career, travel experiences, and the desire to impart a holistic and culturally enriched education to my daughter.
Over a Decade in Career Consulting and Weekly Travel
My professional journey as a career consultant in the HealthCare Informatics industry has spanned over a decade, a period marked by guiding organizations through intricate paths that ultimately affect the greater good of the population’s health. This role was not merely a job; it was a vocation that allowed me to witness the aspirations, challenges, and triumphs of healthcare organizations as they strived to balance quality healthcare while leveraging technology systems. However, it also demanded a lifestyle that involved weekly travel, adding an extra layer of complexity to the delicate balance between work and my personal life.
The constant movement became a canvas for learning about the diverse landscapes and cultures that shaped, not only the United States but the world. Each city I visited became a classroom, offering lessons in adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and the rich tapestry of human experiences. The love of travel grew with every new experience.
Leisure Travel: The Gateway to Cultural Riches and Experience
While work-related travel provided insights into professional landscapes, leisure travel became my passport to the world’s cultural treasures. Exploring different corners of the globe allowed me to peel back the layers of diverse societies, immerse myself in local traditions, and appreciate the beauty of human expression in its myriad forms. Being a first-generation American myself, seeing and understanding my history through the lens of my family and childhood trips has enabled me to embrace new cultures and people easily.
The experiences ranged from wandering through historic cobblestone streets in Europe to savoring exotic street food in bustling South American & African markets. Traveling became a source of inspiration, a continuous education that extended beyond the boundaries of traditional classrooms. It awakened curiosity and appreciation for the world’s vast tapestry, laying the groundwork for a broader perspective on life and the mission to create a generation that also understands and appreciates these things.
More Travel = More Luxury and Comfort
Once You Travel in Luxury, There’s No Turning Back…Have you ever seen the episode of Seinfeld where Jerry is flying first-class and Elaine is stuck in economy class? This is the conundrum that you can find yourself in when traveling often. Imagine being on flights for 6 hours twice a week for 3 months straight…comfort becomes key.
Needless to say, luxury travel, with an emphasis on comfort, exclusivity, and curated experiences, became a hallmark of my journeys. Once exposed to the world of luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and personalized service, there was a profound shift in my expectations.
Being chauffeured in a Jaguar to the tarmac to board a plane, having personalized shopping opportunities filled with champagne and peace, and curated and private sightseeing experiences, have reprioritized comfort and ease. This wasn’t just about indulgence. Rather, it was about embracing a lifestyle that prioritized quality, attention to detail, and the pursuit of unique and enriching experiences.
Luxury travel, in essence, became a metaphor for the standard I aspired to set in all aspects of life, including my daughter’s education. It instilled a belief that learning should be a curated experience, tailored to individual needs, and presented in a way that sparks curiosity and appreciation. Also, living a life that aims to strike a balance between obligation and happiness is an idea that I wholeheartedly embrace.
Shaping My Worldview and Motivation for Worldly Education
The amalgamation of a career in consulting, travel, and luxury experiences cultivated a worldview that transcended geographical boundaries. It was not just about accumulating air miles or staying in opulent hotels; it was about understanding the world’s interconnectedness, appreciating cultural nuances, and recognizing the importance of a well-rounded education. Travel enabled me to understand how I fit in on the world stage. I felt like I had an idea of how Audre Lorde felt traveling to Mexico. All in all, there is an opportunity to understand who you are, transcending nationality and how others define you.
This worldview became the driving force behind my decision to homeschool. I realized that traditional education, while valuable, often lacked the immersive and experiential elements that had profoundly shaped my understanding of the world. Currently, my daughter loves to learn new languages. She also likes to learn about a variety of topics, from dinosaurs to anesthesiology. I thought to myself, why not explore everything that is of interest to her? I wanted to offer my daughter an education that extended beyond textbooks and the classroom—a curriculum that embraced cultural diversity and resilience, encouraged critical thinking and individuality, and nurtured a lifelong love for learning.
Consulting and Travel Experience as a Resource for Guidance
My background as a career consultant and extensive travel experiences uniquely positioned me to guide my daughter’s educational journey. I want her to understand where she fits on the world stage. The expertise gained in advising individuals on career choices, personal development, and life goals seamlessly translated into providing comprehensive guidance for my child’s learning path.
Whether it was offering insights into different critical paths, sharing anecdotes about the cultural intricacies of a particular region, or incorporating real-world experiences into lessons, my professional and travel experiences became valuable resources. It allows me to be, not just a sharer of knowledge, but a mentor, leveraging my knowledge to empower my daughter with a broader understanding of the world and its possibilities. I am confident that this is the best gift that I can give to her.
I also want to share this gift with others. Marrying my consulting and advisory, travel experience, and education techniques has enabled me to lend my expertise to like-minded families who also want to embark on the journey of raising future global ambassadors.
Wrapping it Up: Homeschooling as a Personalized Journey
In the tapestry of my life, the decision to homeschool emerged as a carefully woven thread, integrating career experiences, a passion for travel, and a commitment to offering a worldly education. It is not an easy choice or an easy undertaking. On the other hand, homeschooling is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s a personalized journey that reflects the richness of the diverse landscapes I have encountered, as well as the landscapes I will encounter with my daughter.
I am excited about how she will learn about herself as she traverses across the world. However, she should not be alone! I hope to inspire other mothers to open their children’s eyes to the many offerings travel can afford them.
As I guide my daughter through the world, both physically and intellectually, I am reminded that education is a lifelong expedition. The race is not for the swift. It is about fostering a love for exploration, nurturing curiosity, and instilling values that extend beyond the classroom. It is also about gaining a deeper understanding of who you are and what your impact is.
Homeschooling, for me, is a commitment to cultivate a worldly education with values that enable my little one to be the best person she can be—a legacy that transcends the confines of traditional schooling, and a particular country and equips my daughter with the tools to navigate the intricacies of our interconnected world.
